While winter may have some families in a slump during the homeschool year, we want to encourage you that it can be a wonderful time to homeschool your children. The winter season presents wonderful opportunities to supplement your children’s core educational lessons and curriculum. Homeschooling allows you to add extra activities to keep your child engaged during winter.
At Strike School, we serve families across the country, each with unique needs. Our Learning Coaches create a personalized approach tailored to your child. Many of our Learning Coaches enjoy incorporating seasonal activities into their lessons. We would love to get you started with one of our Learning Coaches today! In the meantime, take a look at some ideas for winter learning.
Keep things cozy while inside
On those extra chilly days, you’ll want to stay inside. To keep children engaged in homeschooling during winter, add some cozy activities into your day. Handiwork activities, such as sewing, crocheting, and knitting, are gaining in popularity, and are skills you can learn right alongside your child! Board games are always a great screen-free activity to partake in when it’s too cold to go outside. One unique aspect of Strike School is our virtual clubs, which we offer to our students. One of our teachers, Ms. Helton, started a Papercraft Club, where students can share anything they’ve made that involves paper. Ms. Helton showed her students how to make mini books, called “zines,” and one of our students even created his own language!
Read some winter-inspired books
Since you will be spending more time inside, this is a great time to encourage your children to read more. A favorite classic is the Little House on the Prairie series, which features the tales of the Ingalls family, as they experience hardships in the Midwest during the 1800s. At Strike School, we also really like Pete the Cat: Snow Daze and Tacky and the Winter Games. Whether you read picture books, chapter books, or graphic novels, any added exposure to language and literature will benefit your children greatly.
Get outside as a part of your PE curriculum
On days when it’s nicer out, consider getting outside as part of your children’s physical education curriculum. Whether you live in a city or in a rural area, there are always ways to spend time outside. Some fun winter outdoor activities include ice skating, skiing, hiking, walking, and (ice) hockey. At Strike School, we provide your families the flexibility to choose how they participate in PE class. While our robust online curriculum offers physical education courses, many of our families choose to do PE in their own, unique ways.
Study up on the Winter Olympics
This winter is the 2026 Winter Olympics, and we think it is a really fun idea to include some Winter Olympics studies in your curriculum. Newsela, an online news platform that aims to improve literacy skills, offers a variety of ways to incorporate the Winter Olympics into classroom studies. Some of these ideas include studying famous Olympians, preparing for and practicing debates about Olympic-related topics, and investigating how snowboarding can teach us about physics, energy, and motion. We know you are going to love these Olympic-themed activities.
No matter where you are in your winter homeschooling journey, we would love to partner with you throughout all the seasons of the year. Get started with us today!
