No parent wants their child to stare at a screen all day with a zombified look on their face. However, for parents new to online homeschooling, finding the best resources for screen time and deciding how to set boundaries for managing it can feel challenging.
Many parents know that excessive amounts of screen time can be harmful to children and can lead to socioemotional problems like anxiety, depression, and hyperactivity.
This may seem concerning, but it does not mean we should fear or even avoid screens. Instead, parents can work with their children to develop healthy boundaries around screen time. Let’s discuss a few tangible ways you can do this in your own home.
Create Screen Time Schedules for the School Day.
As a homeschool parent, you decide how the school day looks. You don’t have to plan out the entire day, but you may want to create a screen time schedule that determines when your children will use screens. When possible, set up screen time in smaller chunks to allow brain breaks for children.
Take Frequent Breaks from Screens.
Taking frequent breaks from screens is a great way to manage screen time. It allows children to reset throughout the school day. When taking breaks, let your children pick a screen-free activity they enjoy participating in.
Add Plenty of Screen-Free Activities Throughout the Day.
To help manage screen time during online homeschooling, build in screen-free activities. Planning these activities ahead of time provides structure for children and takes the guesswork out of what activities you have to offer them. Here are more than 200 ideas you can try.
Go Outside of Your Home.
Getting fresh air regularly is important for many reasons, like increased physical and mental health. It’s also a great way to get kids off screens. No matter where you live, there is bound to be some sort of outdoor activity nearby. Need some ideas to inspire you? Check out these ideas for exploring nature.
Engage in Screen Time with Your Children.
Modeling healthy screen habits will help you manage screen time during online homeschooling and will help set your children up for tech success. Find productive digital activities to do with your children that they find interesting. And since you can build the day you want, you can fit these activities in at any time. Here are some ideas:
- Learn a new skill or language.
- Pick out an interesting article and read it together.
- Use a digital sketchpad to create a new masterpiece.
- Take a masterclass in cooking or baking.
- Write a blog post on a new skill you learned.
- Build a website together.
- Find a new genre of music, listen to a few songs, and discuss what you heard.
